When to Include Tissue for EM and How

Possible case scenarios:

  • A question of an ependymoma or neurocytic tumor arises
  • If sufficient material is submitted in a case of a pituitary adenoma
  • A question of viral infection
  • Demyelinating process
  • Others

Take one or more 1mm fragments and immerse them in Karnovsky fixative vial (Vials in the refrigerator at the frozen section room, both CHP and Presby).

Take the specimen to the EM lab (Floor 1 Scaife, left from the elevator) once the case has been accessioned (If you leave it in the gross room it would be lost. In addition, you do not want to have the tissue for too long in Karnovsky before plastic embedding)

Fill out a requisition form at the EM lab: patient info, PHS case #, possible diagnosis, pathologists are the minimal info needed. If you do not need EM to be process at the time, just circle embed only. You can always go back and use it if you need it.
