Small Specimens: How to Handle

During Working Hours

  • If you are grossing the specimen, please refer to the gross manual
  • It is crucial to either order additional stains up front or to order a minimum of six blanks as soon as the case has been accessioned. If IGLIOMA is a possibility, try to order it up front as well. You might discover that no tissue will remain in the block if you have to face the block twice.
  • If slides from a small case (it should be accessioned as rush) do not turn up in the signing room by 10 AM, call Histology to inquire.

During Evenings, Holidays or Weekends

  • Sometimes a request for fast processing and reading (STAT specimen) is made by the surgeon.
  • If this happens a Saturday afternoon or after hours on a day preceding a holiday, you would have to notify the PA on call or Frank Fusca, who would contact the histotech on call to come the next day to process the block. They would page you to come to histology, sign a form and collect the slides to be read.
