Rotating Senior Pathology Residents - Goals and Expectations

  1. Prior to start of rotation residents email CV to Karen Weber and set up appointment to meet with Rotation Director.
  2. Residents will meet with Karen Weber first day of rotation to review the web site and be oriented to the service and Biosafety issues followed by meeting with the Fellow for further service orientation.
  3. Each resident is assigned a desk or study area in the Neuropathology Rotating Resident's Room.
  4. At the end of the rotation, the resident will complete a self evaluation and hand in case management forms. The attendings and NP Fellow will complete an evaluation of the resident. A meeting will then be scheduled with Dr. Wiley to discuss the evaluation.

The senior pathology resident rotation in neuropathology is a self-study elective designed to consolidate and extend the residents knowledge of diseases of the nervous system.

On completion of the rotation residents will be able to demonstrate competence in:

  1. The functional neuroanatomy of the brain and spinal cord and gross dissection and cassetting.
  2. Diagnostic features of the major CNS tumors, including clinical presentation, radiologic findings, microscopic morphology, therapeutic approach and prognosis.
  3. Capacity to make quality intraoperative slides.
  4. The role of diagnostic neuropathology including why and when to use intraoperative consultations in the clinical management of patients with neurologic symptoms.

EXPECTATIONS

  1. Participate with team (No clinical call)
  2. Preview case radiology and EMR for all subsequent day OR cases
  3. Perform intraoperative consultation on one case per day
    • Review permanent histopathology and create differential diagnosis and propose work up
  4. Read at least 25 pages in general Neuropathology text per day
  5. Complete Blackboard Quiz 1 from all Neuropathology topics by end of week 2, print out graded result and give to Karen.
  6. Complete first unknown slide test by end of first week print out graded result and give to Karen.
  7. Prepare a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation for final QA conference on topic of your choice or create 1 PowerPoint neuropathology case study
  8. Complete Blackboard Quiz 2 from all Neuropathology topics by end of week 4, print out graded result and give to Karen.
  9. Complete second unknown slide test at end of rotation, print out graded result and give to Karen.
  10. Distill and present relevant clinical histories and laboratory findings of the week’s neuropathology autopsy cases. Cut in one case per week.
