Rotating Pediatric Neurology Fellows - Goals and Expectations

  1. Prior to the start of their rotation residents email CV to Karen Weber and set up appointment to meet with Rotation Director.
  2. Residents will meet with Karen Weber first day of rotation to review the web site and be oriented to the service and Biosafety issues followed by meeting with the Fellow for further service orientation.
  3. Each resident is assigned a desk or study area in the Neuropathology Rotating Resident's Room.
  4. At the end of the rotation, the resident will complete a self evaluation. The attendings and NP Fellow will complete an evaluation of the resident. A meeting will then be scheduled with Dr. Wiley to discuss the evaluation.
     

The Neurology resident rotation in neuropathology is a self-study elective designed to consolidate and extend the residents knowledge of diseases of the nervous system. It is of particular interest and value to those considering future careers in pathology, neurology, neurosurgery, radiology and psychiatry.

On completion of the rotation residents will be able to demonstrate competence in:

  1. The functional neuroanatomy of the brain and spinal cord.
  2. Diagnostic features of the major CNS tumors, including clinical presentation, radiologic findings, microscopic morphology, therapeutic approach and prognosis.
  3. Pathophysiology and pathologic anatomy of the major diseases of the nervous system including cardiovascular, infectious, autoimmune, neurodegenerative and developmental.
  4. The role of diagnostic neuropathology including why and when to use intraoperative consultations in the clinical management of patients with neurologic symptoms including neuromuscular disease.

ACTIVITIES

  1. Supervised self-study of texts, web-based didactic material, specimen collections and primary literature.
  2. Attendance of all diagnostic, clinical management and teaching conferences of the division as well as daily case reviews during the standard work week (M-F 8:00-6:00).
  3. Work with clinical team to preview all neuro cases on next day OR schedule.

EXPECTATIONS

  1. Participate with team (No clinical call)
  2. Preview case radiology and EMR for all subsequent day OR cases
  3. Perform intraoperative consultation on one case per day
    • Review permanent histopathology and create differential diagnosis and propose work up
  4. Read at least 25 pages in general Neuropathology text per day
  5. Complete Blackboard Quiz 1 from all Neuropathology topics by end of week 2.
  6. Complete Blackboard Pediatric Neuropathology Test A by end of first week print out graded result and give to Karen.
  7. Complete Blackboard Quiz 2 from all Neuropathology topics by end of week 4.
  8. Complete Blackboard Pediatric Neuropathology Test B at end of rotation, print out graded result and give to Karen.
  9. Distill and present relevant clinical histories and laboratory findings of the week’s neuropathology autopsy cases. Cut in one case per week.
