Autopsy Flow

I. Day of Autopsy

A. Consultation with Neuropathology Fellow
B. Goals of Autopsy discussed
C. Autopsy performed

  1. Brain fixed or dissected and banked
  2. NP sheet filled out by brain banking team
  3. Brain banker gives sheet to Neuropathology Secretary
  4. Folder is made by the Neuropathology Secretary

II. Week before Brain Cutting

A. Thursday

  1. Neuropathology Secretary makes and distributes a list of brains for the following Monday
  2. Neuropathology Secretary prepares NP folders for all the cases which include: NP brain banking sheet if the case was banked, PAD, and clinical summary
  3. Neuropathology Secretary delivers folders to NP fellow
  4. NP fellow distributes folders to all rotating residents

B. Friday

  1. Neuropathology resident creates addendum and enters normal gross template and enters "neuro-relevant" history under "procedure/addendum entry edit" under other neuro text

III. Day 1 of Brain Cutting (Monday)

A. Brains are cut first Monday after 7 days of fixation
B. Gross reviewed with NP fellow at 8:00 AM
C. Neuro-relevant clinical history rehearsed
D. Presented to attending at 8:30 AM
E. Sections taken
F. Gross description and impressions entered

IV. Day 2 (Tuesday)

A. Gross report reviewed with attending and preliminary signed out.

V. Day 4 (Thursday)

A. H&E stained slides delivered to signout area (if they are not received, call Histology at 7-7660)
B. Slides reviewed by resident and special stains are ordered if necessary

VI. Day 5 (Friday)

A. H&E reviewed by resident and Neuropathologist
B. Micro and final diagnosis dictated (provisional diagnosis dictated if special stains are pending)
